Kirtan: Chanting Meditation
Kirtan is soulful meditation that uses traditional Indian instruments and devotional voice to create a pure sound that goes straight to the heart. It is considered by Saints and Sages through thousands of years to be the easiest and most enjoyable way of entering a meditative state. It is call-and-response chanting that effortlessly calls upon sacred energies, which serve to quiet the mind, remove obstacles and bring you back to the centre of your divine being.
Although Kirtan chanting is often sung in Sanskrit, the true language is universal because it is of the heart. These sacred chants contain powerful renewing and transformational energies that serve to reconnect you to the ever-present divine presence that lives within us all.
The style presented here is traditional with the chanting accompanied by just a harmonium and dholak (drum). By keeping it simple, it helps you to focus on divinity, to immerse yourself in loving vibrations without much effort or distraction.
The practice of Kirtan is not about musical ability or training, it is about the heart. It is an aid to purifying the heart and mind by immersing the mind on the divine One. All ages and cultural backgrounds can enjoy this chanting for there are no prerequisites for participation.
You can meditate simply listening to Kirtan, however the Bhakti Masters advise you to sing with it as a call and response to receive more benefit. The words sung in this chant are Radhe Radhe Govinda Govinda Radhe. They are divine names of the supreme power of divine love manifest in the forms of Radhe and Govinda. Bhakti, the lead singer, sings each line first, and Swamiji, along with those participating, sing the same in reply
